[afro-nets] New Medical Journal from PLoS (Public Library of Science)

New Medical Journal from PLoS (Public Library of Science)
---------------------------------------------------------

Dear Colleagues,

We would like to introduce PLoS Medicine, the new journal from
the Public Library of Science (PLoS), to you. As an open access
journal, articles in PLoS Medicine will be immediately and al-
ways freely available online from our website and from PubMed
Central. We will publish monthly, with a first issue in Autumn,
2004, and are now accepting submissions.

PLoS is a nonprofit organization of scientists and physicians
committed to open-access (subscription-free) publishing. PLoS
Medicine will be our second journal (we launched PLoS Biology -
www.plosbiology.org - last October) and will publish high-
quality studies across all medical disciplines.

We particularly encourage submission of research that addresses
the global burden of disease, not just that of the developed
world. In addition, in order to explain the relevance of work to
as many people as possible we will also be writing synopses of
research papers aimed at people outside the immediate specialty
(you can see examples of these on PLoS Biology
www.plosbiology.org already) and, attached to the papers them-
selves, we will have summaries for patients.

Research articles published in PLoS Medicine will, as you would
expect, be rigorously peer-reviewed. In our unique collaborative
model of peer review the process is handled by professional edi-
tors in consultation with academic editors drawn from our edito-
rial board of more than 80 physicians and researchers worldwide
and peer reviewers.

In addition to research articles, we will have a magazine sec-
tion which will be a lively and provocative mix of synopses of
research articles, controversies, essays, opinions, commentar-
ies, and learning materials from a diverse and international
group of authors. We hope that the Magazine will be a fascinat-
ing and compelling read-accessible to a general medical and non-
medical audience alike-that stimulates debate, covers neglected
health issues, and helps people understand the implications of
health research and policy

Please feel free to pass on this email to colleagues or list
serves who may be interested in PLoS Medicine. You can get more
information from our website http://www.plosmedicine.org, submit
research papers at http://medicine.plosjms.org, and you can con-
tact us directly on mailto:medicine_editors@plos.org or in the
details below.
