Regional Network on Equity in Health - "EQUINET"
------------------------------------------------

The Southern African Network on Equity in Health (EQUINET) is a net-
work of research, civil society and health sector organisations work-
ing towards and influencing equity in health in Southern Africa.
EQUINET aims to build an enhanced focus, information and informed de-
bate on equity in health in Southern Africa leading to positive poli-
cies towards equity in health from local to regional level.

In 1999/2000 EQUINET aims to:

1. Develop and widen the conceptual understanding of equity in health
and identify critical areas of work and policy issues in relation to
equity in health;

2. Make visible existing unfair and avoidable inequalities in health;

3. Gather and analyse information, develop and carry out research to
support scientific debates and policy decisions on equity in health
in Southern Africa;

4. Engage stakeholders in its work, networking professionals and
stakeholders, including at community level;

5. Influence and monitor implementation of policies and agendas on
health at national and regional level in Southern Africa, including
at Southern African Development Community (SADC) level.

EQUINET is now active. It has commenced its research programmes, is
calling for proposals for new areas of funding and has just estab-
lished its website at:
http://www.equinet.org.zw

The website is regularly updated with current information about eq-
uity in health in the region, and contains information about the call
for proposals for small grants. If you have difficulty accessing the
internet, then contact us and we will send you the details of the
small grants by e-mail.

Better still, subscribe to the EQUINET mailing list. We have estab-
lished a new mailing list as the principal forum for discussion on
issues in EQUINET related to equity and health in Southern Africa. We
have five theme areas for this discussion, viz:
* Monitoring equity in health;
* Globalisation, macro-economic policy and equity in health;
* Governance, social capital and health rights;
* Resource allocation for health;
* Health Service issues.

If you would like to participate in the EQUINET mailing list, please

sending us an e-mail or letter to one of the addresses below, includ-
ing your full contact information (including fax and e-mail). We
would also be grateful if you could let us know whether you have ac-
cess to internet and your primary areas of work and interest in
health.

Please do not reply to us via AFRO-NETS but send us a direct response
via your private mail box - we don't want to clog up the AFRO-NETS
list!

EQUINET documents that have already been published are available on
the Web site and can be downloaded. If you cannot access these on the
internet please let us know and we will endeavour to make hard copies
available.
