Research in Protozoan Pathogens - East African Regional Workshop
----------------------------------------------------------------
22 - 25 May, 2002
Mombasa, Kenya
Organizers:
Dr. Monique K. Wasunna, KEMRI, Nairobi, Kenya
Patrick Duffy, Carol Hopkins Sibley and Kenneth Stuart, University of
Washington, Seattle, USA
Applications are invited from graduate and postdoctoral students, or
beginning faculty members, from the East African region for partici-
pation in a 4-day workshop on Protozoan Pathogens. The workshop is
sponsored with funds from the US National Institutes of Health (NIH)
through the Fogarty International Center (FIC) International Training
for Research in Emerging Infectious Diseases grant to the University
of Washington, a Malaria Research Training Program grant to Seattle
Biomedical Research Institute and the Kenya Medical Research Insti-
tute.
About 30 participants will be selected based on a curriculum vitae,
statement of professional interests, and recommendation from at least
one mentor. Applicants will be required to submit an abstract of re-
search work they have performed, or would be interested in perform-
ing, related to any aspect of protozoan pathogens. The cost of the
workshop and accommodation will be covered for all student partici-
pants, and travel expenses will be covered for as many participants
as possible. The workshop will include lectures, discussions, and
round table sessions by invited speakers as well as posters and se-
lected presentations by participants.
A faculty of East African and international scientists will conduct
the 4-day workshop for young East African students and scientists in-
terested in basic and applied research on malaria, leishmaniasis and
trypanosomiasis. The course will emphasize the scientific process as
it applies to parasitic diseases, from basic discovery to transla-
tional research that leads to new therapeutics, diagnostics and con-
trol measures.
Areas to be covered include:
* Genomics research in trypanosomiasis
* Malaria pathogenesis and vaccines
* Leishmania and malaria diagnostics
* Drug resistance and drug development
* Operational research
The workshop will emphasize student participation through symposia,
poster sessions, roundtable discussions, hands-on laboratory sessions
and informal interactions. The workshop organizers hope to generate
interest in parasitic diseases research, to promote networks of East
African and international scientists and students, and to identify
graduate students and young scientists who may be interested in
graduate or postdoctoral training at research facilities in East Af-
rica or overseas.
Interested students can get more information on the application proc-
ess and download an Adobe PDF form at:

Requests by post for an application should be clearly marked "Proto-
zoan Pathogens Workshop". However if you have difficulty obtaining
the application form, then a CV, letter of support from your supervi-
sor and a short description of the research that you are currently
doing, or would like to do will be sufficient. That information
should be mailed to Dr. Wasunna <kmwasunna@hotmail.com > directly.
Especially outstanding students selected to participate will receive
support for their travel, room and board. Early application is ad-
vised since the number of available slots is limited and will be
filled on a first come, first served basis from amongst qualified ap-
plicants.
Application deadline: 15 March 2002.
