Research Methodology Training Course in the Field of HIV/AIDS,
Tuberculosis and Malaria

The Graduate School, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of
the Witwatersrand is delighted to announce a Research Methodol-
ogy Training Course in the Field of HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and
Malaria from the 29th November - 10th December 2004

This research training course is designed to prepare researchers
and postgraduate students with requisite knowledge for formulat-
ing sound projects to meet the requirements of postgraduate
training of the University of the Witwatersrand and other uni-
versities

ON OFFER: A selection of one or more of the following topics
will be covered in the final programme depending on partici-
pants� needs and interests:

* Principles of problem identification and selection of a re-
search topic
* Requirements for enrolment into masters and PhD training pro-
grammes
* Steps in proposal development i.e. formulation of objectives,
study design, sampling, budgeting etc.
* Introduction to Data Management and Statistical Analysis
* Introduction to Ethics in Health Research
* Writing Scientific Papers, Theses and Reports
* Navigating Cyberspace: using e-books and journals
* A review of pertinent research techniques and methodologies
* Case studies in implementing research proposals in the field
of HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria
* Supervised individual research protocols to meet expectations
of assessor groups
* Sources of funding for research proposals in the field of
HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria
* Presentation of protocols to a panel of experienced supervi-
sors and assessors of postgraduate research proposals
* Field site visits to selected research entities and discussion
with prospective supervisors and collaborators
* Networking with other postgraduate students and researchers in
SADC Region

FEES: Tuition fees to participate in the RMTC are ZAR 5,000 ex-
clusive of travel costs to the venue in Johannesburg as well as
accommodation and board expenses. Prospective applicants should
apply to WHO, UNDP, EU, UNAIDS, SIDA, CDC, etc. National AIDS
Councils and Ministries of Health which have funded such pro-
grammes in the past. The organizers have secured a limited num-
ber of fellowships from the Belgium Technical Co-operation for
eligible postgraduate students and researchers from the SADC re-
gion. Each application should include a clearly articulated mo-
tivation that indicates that the applicant would benefit from
the training.

TEACHING METHODOLOGY: The Research Methodology Training Course
(RMTC) is planned for 20 researchers and trainees intending to
embark on postgraduate studies in the field of HIV/AIDS, tuber-
culosis and malaria. Teaching will be done by experienced local
and regional facilitators from the SADC region that will be re-
sponsible for the course material. The final programme will be
based on the needs of the participants who are expected to take
responsibility for their own learning by doing. There will be
minimal didactic teaching.
