The University of the Witwatersrand�s Faculty of Health Sciences, is dedicated to build research capacity in South Africa and the African region. The Faculty is inviting applications for enrolment in a Research Methodology Training Course.
Applicants to this course should be eligible to register for a postgraduate degree at one of the Schools in the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa. Applicants are thus required to identify a field of research http://www.health.wits.ac.za/ that matches that of a faculty member who would supervise the research.
The research training course is primarily designed to prepare prospective postgraduate students with requisite knowledge for formulating sound protocols to meet the requirements of postgraduate training of the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg.
COURSE CONTENT:
A selection of the following topics will be covered in the final programme depending on participants� needs and background:
� Principles of problem identification and selection of a research topic
� Requirements for enrolment into Masters and Doctorate programmes
� Steps in proposal development i.e. formulation of objectives, study design, sampling, budgeting etc.
� Introduction to Data Management and Statistical Analysis
� Introduction to Ethics in Health Research
� Writing Scientific Papers
� Navigating Cyberspace: using e-books and journals
� Review of pertinent research techniques and methodologies
� Case studies in implementing research proposals
� Supervised individual research protocols to meet expectations of assessor groups
� Presentation of protocols to a panel of experienced supervisors and assessors of postgraduate research proposals
� Site visits to selected research entities and discussion with prospective supervisors
� Networking with other postgraduate students and researchers in the Africa Region
DATES: The dates for the course are 9 to 20 July, 2007
FEES: The course fees are R5000.00 per applicant. Please note that this only covers tuition fees and does not include accommodation and transport to the course venue.
EXPECTED OUTCOMES:
� Each student will be expected to contribute effectively to group activities, such as presentations, discussions and critical appraisals.
� The student will be expected to use experience gained in further developing a research protocol to be used for postgraduate study in the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of the Witwatersrand.
� Evaluation of the course content and presentation by each student
� Oral appraisal of students by a panel of supervisors not directly involved in the teaching of the RMTC
� Students who complete all modules are eligible to receive a Certificate of Competence of the University of the Witwatersrand
LIMITED FELLOWSHIPS: A limited number of Fellowships is available through the Belgian Technical Cooperation (BTC) to attend the course. The research protocol needs to be in the field of HIV and AIDS, Tuberculosis or Malaria to qualify for a Belgian Technical Cooperation fellowship.
