AFRO-NETS> Reuse of the female condom (2)

Reuse of the female condom (2)
------------------------------

FHI is conducting two studies and has several more planned to evaluate
the feasibility and advisability of female condom reuse. Currently, we
are conducting a study in Zambia and Bolivia among female condom users
to ascertain the incidence of reuse and to determine "why the women
reuse the female condom, how they clean and store it, and how many
times >they reuse it", etc.

Great to hear that some studies on the re-use of female condom are be-
ing conducted in Zambia and Bolivia. I just came back from Pretoria,
South Africa attending UNAID's consultative meeting on the promotion of
female condoms in East and Southern Africa. The issue of reuse of fe-
male condoms was extensively discussed. Are you aware that a similar
study is being conducted in South Africa through the Reproductive
Health Research Project? I am sure you will have a lot to share with
researchers under this project.

During the meeting most people were sceptical about the whole exercise
while others were excited. Of course each group had its own arguments
and I am glad such studies are being conducted elsewhere. I am sure
some definite and conclusive results on the re-use of condoms will be
very much welcome to all those now starting to be aggressive in promot-
ing the method in Africa. Please keep us posted.
