-------------------------

Dear Andrew Dickson,

I received your request for information on AIDS NGOs in Nigeria.
There are a few, but one I am most familiar with is the ECWA AIDS
Ministry.

ECWA, the Evangelical Church of West Africa, is one of the largest
Christian denominations in Nigeria, with an estimated membership of
over 4 million and churches spread across Nigeria. The AIDS programme
of the church was officially started towards the end of 1996. The
initial focus was the church leaders and leaders of various fellow-
ship groups like the youth, women, and other such church groups. The
emphasis was on creating awareness on AIDS and various issues dealing
with AIDS. Seminars and workshops were organised for these leaders,
after which they were expected to transmit the message to their mem-
bers. Between 1997 and 1999 the ECWA AIDS Awareness team had been
able to cover most of the ECWA churches, seminaries and other insti-
tutions across the length and breadth of Nigeria. Early in 2000, a
Counselling Unit was established to deal with issues of People Living
with HIV/AIDS. The original awareness unit continues to travel around
as before. The Counselling Unit is hospital-based, but is also in-
volved in home visits.

The ECWA AIDS Ministry collaborates with a number of other organiza-
tions involved in AIDS work.

You should please contact the following people for more information:
