RFI: Contacts for research purposes (3)
---------------------------------------
In response to A. Bukenya's recent posting on his research pro-
ject concerning the HIV/AIDS endemic in RAKAI District of S.
Uganda I wish to add the following. Some years back I faced the
task in Africa to create a training program for heavy equipment
operators. Subsequent to the ineffectiveness of the customary
European - North American Training Manuals my exploration and
consultation with the operators led me to the recognition that
music and dance are the preferred mode of communication in the
African culture. Hence, I sought collaboration with local "art-
ists" and following some lengthy struggle we succeeded in cre-
ating suitable training songs, technical posters and dance
steps to the delight and benefit of the operators. No doubt,
white faces found this approach weird, but it worked.
Dealing with teenagers and young adults, music and songs are
their universal language worldwide. I am certain that local
artists could create songs on prevention and protection appeal-
ing to these youngsters in the dialect of their environment.
While I realize that foreigners may find this approach weird
but it does work. Give it a try!
Sincerely,
Dr Sigmund de Janos
