RFI: Study on Schistosomiasis (3)
---------------------------------
Dear Dr. Gerito Augusto,
I am writing from Ifakara Health Research and Development Centre
(IHRDC). The IHRDC is in Morogoro district South-eastern Tanzania.
The centre has been involved in schistosomiasis studies from the
1980s. This has succeeded through the collaboration of the Danish
Bilharziasis Laboratory (DBL) in Denmark, the Swiss Tropical Insti-
tute (STI) in Switzerland and above all the WHO/TDR support.
From those activities the centre has managed to accumulate a lot of
experience in conducting epidemiological and intervention / opera-
tional studies in the field. There are tools that have been developed
and papers written as a result of the projects. The WHO/TDR schisto-
somiasis manual that includes a school morbidity questionnaire is a
case worth mentioning for your reference.
The IHRDC as of today, has two on-going projects relating to schisto-
somisas namely:
1. The Kilosa School Health Project under Irish Aid support and
2. Phase II of a study on Makers of Morbidity in Schistosoma haemato-
bium infection under EU support.
With that background I am proposing the following:
1. To do a literature search on Ifakara Tanzania or Kilombero Tanza-
nia and Schistosomiasis in MEDLINE or other search engines.
2. The IHRDC has some good experiences and materials for you that may
be difficult to explore exhaustively through simple mail exchanges /
search. Will it be possible for you to visit the centre and the on-
going projects to learn more "on site" and put oneself in a position
to decide your way ahead for your work?
3. Please establish similar links with the DBL and WHO/TDR who will
definitely assist you in one way or other in your career/academic
work in schistosomiasis...if you have not done so yet.
*In the mean time I am forwarding your request to the Project Manag-
ers of the two on-going projects here at Ifakara for more discussion
on how to help you. You may also write directly to Mr. Hassan
Mshinda, Director (IHRDC) and Project Manager Kilosa School Health
Project using the address below. Also to Dr. Christopher Hatz and
Christian Lengeler at STI and Dr. Brigit Venevald at DBL, Dr. Fabio
Zicker at WHO/TDR.
Kindly keep in touch.
Yours sincerely,
John Kimario
