RFI: Transfusion-associated AIDS
--------------------------------
Dear AFRO-NETS members,
I am writing to find out research groups or individuals working in
Africa, who have an interest in transfusion-associated paediatric
HIV/AIDS. It has become clear in recent years that the prevalence of
severe paediatric anaemia requiring blood transfusion, particularly
in malaria-endemic regions has markedly increased. At the same time,
the prevalence of HIV among blood donors is also on the increase, to
the extent that safe blood has become a scarce and rare commodity. Is
there like any data/information showing how big a problem this issue
is - like how frequently children get transfused with blood that is
not screened for HIV (for any reasons - no test kit, child too sick
to wait for screening, etc) and any studies following up children
following a transfusion to see who becomes HIV positive among other
outcomes that may arise?? Looking forward to hearing from you.
