Short Course in Reproductive Health Research

The Reproductive Health Research Unit of the Department of Obstetrics and
Gynaecology - Baragwanath Hospital in collaboration with the South African
Medical Research Council and the Health Systems Trust organise a four week
course in Reproductive Health Research with the aim to support and improve
reproductive health policy, planning and programmes by building capacity in
reproductive health research, and developing a network of regional
expertise in reproductive health research.

The course content will consider the whole research process:

- identifying a research problem
- reviewing literature and other sources of information including the Internet
- choosing appropriate study designs
- ethical considerations
- proposal development
- budgeting
- sourcing funds for research
- implementing and managing a research project
- analysis of data and interpretation
- report writing and dissemination of research findings
- implementation of research recommendations

Key issues in reproductive health will be discussed and integrated into the
research methods of teaching:

- approaches to investigating sexual behaviour
- research on safe motherhood
- STDs and HIV
- fertility regulation (contraception and unsafe abortion)
- cervical cancer
- infertility and health service delivery issues

Participants will be expected to complete a short post-course research
project for which supervision will be provided.

The course is suitable for those with an interest in reproductive health
and some previous research experience. A degree is preferable but
applicants with other relevant experience will be considered.

Fees for tuition only are ZAR 4000 (US $ 900). Accommodation and meals for
four weeks can be provided at a cost of ZAR 2700 (US $ 600). In addition
participants will need funds for travel. A number of bursaries are
available, which will cover fees, accommodation and travel.

An application form which is available from the address below has to be
submitted latest by 14 April, 1997 accompanied by a brief curriculum vitae
and a letter of motivation outlining the previous research experience and
the relevance of the course to the applicant's work.
