[afro-nets] Special Event on the Implementation of the Human Right to Food

Special Event on the Implementation of the Human Right to Food
--------------------------------------------------------------

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) is inviting you to the Special Event on the Implementation of the Human Right to Food, as part of the 32nd session of the Committee on World Food Security (CFS), on Saturday, 4 November 2006 at FAO headquarters in Rome, Italy.

The purpose of the Special Event is to inform about the progress made in implementing the right to food and discuss practical steps to advance this human right and a rights-based approach at country level. This morning event will combine panel discussions with an ongoing "information fair" on the implementation of the right to food where stakeholders will be able to showcase their work at five thematic stands, presenting specific aspects of the realization of the right to food at the country level . The event is expected to be attended by more than 300 policy-makers and other experts in food security and human rights from governments, international organizations, civil society and the private sector. All those attending this event will be able to participate in the panel discussions for which lead speakers have already been identified.

While FAO's interest lies mainly in promoting realization of the right to food, the close linkages between this and other human rights are fully recognised. Those wishing to participate in the event are thus welcome to include contributions and inputs which contribute indirectly to right to food realization. Such contributions may relate to a rights-based approach to development, for example, from food security experts as well as specialists in the fields of governance, participatory development, human rights, and access to justice.

You can participate in the "information fair" in two ways:
1) by sending us material related to the implementation of the human right to food to be displayed on one or more of the theme stands, and,
2) by being present at the different stands for about three hours in the morning of Saturday, 4 November to present your documents and to inform conference participants and visitors about the goals and work of your organization as it relates to implementing the right to food.

We would thus be grateful if you could inform us at your earliest convenience whether you wish to contribute to the "information fair", and, if so, in which or both of the above manners. Please also indicate any assistance you may need in this regard. The questionnaire attached is designed to help you indicate in which stand(s) you wish to display your material and in which of these you would like to be present. You can get the provisional Agenda from the address above.

We sincerely hope you will be able to participate in this innovative and pioneering event. Please do not hesitate to contact us should you have any questions or need further information about it.
