Supercourse Newsletter, August 23, 2002
---------------------------------------
Dear Friends,
1,000 Best Lectures of Prevention, 10,000 Best Scientist of Preven-
tion, and 80% of the countries
We have three unique and wonderful goals on the horizon. Currently we
have 851 lectures, 9,389 faculty, and 134 countries.
We very much would like for you to be included in the 1,000 most won-
derful prevention lecture CDs. Rumor has it that you are either in
the prevention CD, or you are not in global health (only kidding).
World wide many of us are busily getting our lectures for teaching.
We know that our best lectures will be seen by only about 40 lectures
in our countries. However, if you include your lecture in the Super-
course, your lecture will be available in over 150 countries with
over 20,000 students seeing. We fear that you will be left out of the
global teaching, and sadly, few will know you world wide. But, by
sending in just one small lecture, you too will be known world wide.
It will be a wonderful treat for you, and for the world on Halloween,
Oct. 31. It would be sad that when we send you 1,000 lectures on the
CD in November, that you will look for your name among the elite
scientists, and you will not be there. We want to include you on the
CD, we want you to be seen across the world.
Mita just analyzed the participation rate by country, and we were as-
tonished that there were 9,389 faculty from 134 countries. We want to
have 10,000 people in the Supercourse by Halloween as well. Please
try to recruit people and we will send each of them (and you) the CD.
What is most exciting is that we are well on our way of having fac-
ulty in every country in the world. Isn't that fantastic? We cur-
rently have faculty form 134 countries. We present below the distri-
bution of where our faculty comes from, so you can see how many are
from your country and others. If you know anyone in the countries
where we have no participants, please tell them about the Super-
course. We hope that in a year we could have faculty from EVERY coun-
try of the world, so that we all are part of a truly global commu-
nity.
There are some amazing developments. For example, Eugene Shubnikov
has done a fantastic job. When he started there were only 8 people
from Russia, and Russia was far down the list of faculty. However in
only a year, Russia has moved from about 105th position, to fourth,
surpassing every country other than UK, Canada and the US. Sadly, the
Austria has dropped down to number 5th position. Perhaps the faculty
in the Austria and other countries might want to recruit a few more
people, which would be great.
A new Egyptian/Arab Supercourse is evolving very rapidly as well. Dr.
Rasslam and Saad just started this, last month, and now have 33 fac-
ulty and 7 lectures. Soon we will have considerable information on
prevention from Egypt. All of us need this, especially now that we
are seeing the large outbreaks of West Nile Fever in several parts of
the world, for example.
IEA: The IEA meeting in Montreal was great. We had a 90 minute ses-
sion. John Last gave a wonderful talk about the future of Science and
the Internet. Ron talked about terrorism. Akira gave an excellent
overview talk about the Supercourse. Eugene talked in depth about the
rapidly developing program of I-Prevention. Eun Ryoung, discussed the
concept of open source. The meeting had a large number of people,
perhaps 2-3 hundred, and was better attended then most sessions. In
addition, Mita developed a small handout, and we got almost 90 new
members of the Supercourse who we will be sending CDs to.
Holiday Presents: We figured out a neat holiday present for you at
the end of the year, like our calendar. This present will be a neat
surprise.
Remember, Remember, Remember
150, 1,000, 10,000 by Halloween
Thanks so much for making this a success. Good by summer in Pitts-
burgh, Hello Fall
