[afro-nets] The courage and tenacity of the millions of older women

The courage and tenacity of the millions of older women
-------------------------------------------------------

Dear Colleagues

I think this is worth noting. It is old, but it still is rele-
vant.

The hope of Africa - New vistas by JEREMY SEABROOK December 2002

A quote from the essay:

The bleakness of Africa is relieved, not by promises of a phan-
tom "international community", but by the courage and tenacity
of the millions of older women who have become carers of the
terminally sick, from whom a global market capriciously with-
holds basic drugs, in the name of freedoms which they find dif-
ficult to understand.
>>>>>>>

These millions of older women deserve support..... and they are
not getting it either from the local national leadership, nor
from the international community. When we get the Afrifund Data-
base up and running, maybe these people will not be so com-
pletely left out.

Sincerely,

The courage and tenacity of the millions... (2)

Hi,

Thanks Peter for this very basis and still relevant piece of re-
minder. In the rush to provide treatment for the afflicted,
these group of affected individuals are not given due recogni-
tion and support for the roles they are playing in this epidemic
especially given that they in their own right do need support
and treatment for their own health and numerous other social de-
privety they suffer.

Thanks,
