PROGRAMMES
1. Rural Development Network (RDN) - Uganda - an indigenous NGO to
carry out activities in the fields of agricultural transformation,
environment protection, primary health care, promotion of education
and training in technical skills for sustainable development, and em-
powerment of the marginalised groups in Uganda. RDN is using an inte-
grated rural development approach to develop rural areas through
gradual geographical targeting of the most affected areas of Iganga
District, in the Eastern region of Uganda. They seek funding.

2. Social Entrepreneurship Awards - Global - The Schwab Foundation
will reward initiatives in social entrepreneurship that have signifi-
cantly improved people's lives and have the potential to be adapted
to other settings. This is US$ 1 million to individuals and/or or-
ganizations. No self-nominations. Particular interest in initiatives
that combine 2 or more of: Health, Education, Environment, Economic
Development, Civic Participation, and Communications' Tools.

3. African Women Welfare Foundation (AWWF) - West, East & Southern
Africa - working towards empowerment and rights of women. AWWF plans
vide support for widows who have been left without a means of liveli-
hood; provide counselling service and emergency contraception for
sexually abused women; offer literacy programmes and vocational
skills for women; give poor rural HIV positive pregnant women the
support and medication so they will not their infants. Developing pi-
lot programme with women in a refugee camp on the outskirts of Lagos,
Nigeria, with a large population of women and children displaced from
Liberia, Sierra Leone and Zaire. Seeking technical and financial as-
sistance.

4. DebtChannel.org - Global - OneWorld has launched a global portal
on international debt, in partnership with over 70 leading aid agen-
cies, human rights and campaign groups worldwide. It includes: the
latest news on debt; actions to take to help Drop the Debt; online
discussions, events and networking; and a web directory of direct
links to organisations working on debt.

5. Participatory Theatre for the Rights of Women & Girls - Nepal - a
British Council training project working with performers and commu-
nity development workers on a participatory theatre approach to the
Rights of women and girls. 3 phases. Phase 1 introduced participatory
methodology. Participants explored their own attitudes to gender and
made performances based on personal stories. Phase 2 followed par-
ticipants to their regions and worked within communities taking the
process of research from the community into performances which re-
flected their concerns. Phase 3 will focus on creating a small team
of Nepalese performers/facilitators who will provide a national re-
source/pool of expertise and training.

6. Radio Forum, 3rd World Summit on Media for Children (TWSMC) -
Greece - 23-26 Mar. 2001. Discussion will focus on the role of radio
in children's media with an emphasis on social, educational and eco-
nomic potentials, looking at how new technologies are meeting needs.
Speakers from East Africa, South Africa, South Asia, Asia Pacific,
Latin America and the USA will define issues relating to the future
of radio that involves youth in the context of globalisation.

7. Equal Access (= access) - Global - is a digital satellite broad-
casting service dedicated to serving the news, education, health and
development needs of poor communities within the developing world. It
will work closely with on-the-ground development organizations to
create communications campaigns and educational programmes. = access
will provide multiple high-quality digital radio networks and addi-
tional multimedia services. It will support the delivery of these
services to rural and urban poor communities through the donation of
community-based receivers, computers and solar power systems.

9. Institute for Balanced Information for Democratic Elections
(IBIDE) - Kenya - a project of the Rural Community Information Net-
work (RCIN) examines using VHS video playback as an alternative media
in regions currently reached only by state-owned Kenya Broadcasting
Corporation Television & Radio. This is in order to help these commu-
nities make balanced and unbiased decisions during the General Elec-
tions 2002.

11. Voices of Youth (VOY) has launched a forum for youth to comment
on the images of children and young people. Are these images fair?
Realistic? Accurate? Stereotyping? Leading up to the 3rd World Summit
on Children & the Media, VOY will be networking with children and
youth, especially those working on media-related projects. Their
opinions will be presented to media professionals during the Summit.

16. "Living with the Rubbish Queen: Telenovelas, Culture & Modernity
in Brazil" by Thomas Tufte. This case study is an analysis of the
historical matrices of the telenovela, a production analysis, an in-
stitutional analysis and a range of 'telenovela interviews' with low-
income urban women. Tufte situates his study within the framework of
media ethnography and in doing so, draws heavily on Latin American
cultural theory, which is virtually unknown to the English-speaking
world.

17. "Community Informatics: Enabling Communities with Information &
Communications Technologies", by Michael Gurstein - Outlines an ap-
proach for linking economic and social development efforts at the
community level to the opportunities that information and communica-
tion's technologies present. Issues such as trends, controversies,
challenges and opportunities facing the community application of ICTs
are studied.

18. "Growing Up" - a sex education film series for youth in South
Asia. For English speaking schoolchildren, to be used within a cur-
riculum or interaction group. 3 films: "From Small to Big" - the ba-
sics of reproductive anatomy, and the physical changes of puberty;
"It's Not Just Physical" - the mental and emotional changes of ado-
lescence; and, "Boy Meets Girl" - the world of sexual attraction,
crushes, relationships, love and sex. All based on personal experi-
ences and opinions expressed by youth in their own words.
