Organized by the South African Gender Based Violence and Health Ini-

SAGBVHI, which was formed in 2000, is a partnership of 15 organiza-
tions working on gender based violence and health issues. SAGBVHI
plans to host an annual conference on gender based violence and
health in April 2002. Set to become an annual event, the conference
will attempt to raise awareness about intersection between gender
based violence and health and to find creative ways of building a
violent free society. The conference aims to bring together interna-
tional and national researchers, academics, health professionals,
government departments and civil society organizations in defining a
multi-sectoral response that is informed by health sector.

Preliminary conference objectives have been defined as:

* To raise profile of gender based violence as a health issue;
* To debate key challenges facing the health sector in addressing
  gender based violence and seek solutions;
* To share research findings and methodologies on gender based vio-
  lence and health.

The conference will be held over three days in Gauteng, South Africa.
It will draw on international and national expertise in stimulating
discussion. The first day will focus on defining problems or chal-
lenges of gender based violence and health. The second day will ex-
plore current programmes on gender based violence and health, spe-
cifically training and curriculum development for health profession-
als. The final day will explore how challenges can be addressed.

In order to ensure a diverse and representative conference atten-
dance, a number of bursaries will be made available. Bursaries will
cover conference fee package (travel, accommodation, meals and regis-
tration). A call for papers will be issued in November 2001.
