Vacancy: Medical Research Council - Presidency

This top executive position in the Cape Town, South Africa Medical
Research Council (MRC) has been vacant since October 2002. The MRC is
one of eight Science, Engineering and Technology Institutes (SETI's)
operating within the national Science System of the Republic of South
Africa. The MRC's task is to improve the health of the population of
South Africa through excellent scientific research. Strategic intent
and goals of the MRC are:

* to enrich the culture of human rights as a core value system in
  health research and all of the organisation;
* to create health innovations through trans-disciplinary research
  and knowledge management in consultation with stakeholders;
* to be a leading learning organization with international status and
  credibility;
* to develop an appropriate science and technology base and capacity;
* to address current and future health challenges while at the same
  time creating sustainable growth.

The MRC is governed by a Board, which is appointed by the Minister of
Health. The Board invites suitably qualified candidates with the nec-
essary experience and track record of excellence to apply for this
challenging and rewarding position at the MRC Head Office in Tyger-
berg, Cape Town. The successful candidate should be medically quali-
fied and registered with the Health Professions Council of South Af-
rica. He or she will be scientist of international standing with a
post-graduate research degree.

Nominated and headhunted candidates will also be considered. Formal
management training would serve as a strong recommendation. The MRC
