Value of the Internet (9)

Dear Jeremy Clark and the Afro-Nets community,
First, Jeremy's comments regarding HealthNet/SatelLife are certainly
welcomed.
Can HealthNet tell us (periodically) - let's call it a baseline num-
ber - how many systems they have world-wide and where they are? Can
they then tell us how many "users" there are in each country?
We have made an effort to track this information at our Web site
based here in Boston (http://www.healthnet.org). You will find a
break-down of countries that have HealthNet activities. We have also
listed the number of users in the various countries.
[For those of you with e-mail only access, send a message to
'getweb@usa.healthnet.org' to learn more about how to access this,
and other material, on the World Wide Web.]
To give a brief summary of SatelLife/HealthNet's activities to date:
There are twenty-one countries in Sub-Saharan Africa which have
HealthNet activities. Of these twenty-one, four have a 'groundsta-
tion', in some cases two, which serves either a remote hospital or
research centre. Larger networks exist in Kenya, Uganda, South Af-
rica, Tanzania, and Zimbabwe. The number of accounts in these coun-
tries range from 40-250. It is important to note that each account
includes an average of 2-5 users. Other countries such as Botswana,
Burkina Faso, Eritrea, Ghana, Senegal and Sudan have smaller Health-
Net networks.
There are five countries in South Asia which have HealthNet activi-
ties. Of these, there is a 'groundstation' which serves a tropical
disease research centre in the south-eastern part of China. Nepal is
the largest and most active HealthNet in this region with 84 ac-
counts.
There are two countries in Latin America/Caribbean which have Health-
Net activities. Of these, Haiti has a 'groundstation' which serves
the Albert Schweitzer Hopital in Deschapelles. In Bolivia, HealthNet
serves an association of health NGOs of which 45 offices are con-
nected.
I hope this information is of use to you. If you or anyone else have
any further questions or comments, feel free to contact me directly.
Best regards,
Kerry Gallivan
