WHO Warns Vatican on Condom Advice (2)
--------------------------------------

This is really very worrying, coming at a time when we need to
have everyone on board for the global fight against AIDS. It is
even more worrying at a time when there are ongoing efforts to
further involve faith-based organizations in the fight against
this dreadful disease. The so-called success story from Uganda
was made possible by the coming together of all groups in the
country including the religious organizations. The importance of
a multidimensional approach to HIV/AIDS prevention built on the
ABC of Abstinence, Being Faithful and using Condoms has been well
recognised and has worked in many countries and communities. The
evidence is there for all to see.

Fortunately, from my experience in Africa, the members of the
Catholic Church don't always follow what their leaders say. When
you analyze contraceptive prevalence data by religion, the Catho-
lics always seem to be very prominent on the list. I think their
leaders should begin to listen to their followers. He who wears
the shoe knows where it is pinching! WHO must come out strongly
to counter this misinformation. Let's start by organizing a
knowledge update for all the staff of the Vatican.
