E-DRUG: A Study in Antibiotic Resistance - Worth Sharing
-------------------------------------------------------
Dear E-druggers,
For advocacy groups and others interested in multi antibiotic resistance,
the article ESBL-producing multidrug-resistant Providencia stuartii
infections in a university hospital by Tumbarello M, Citton R, Spanu T,
Sanguinetti M, Romano L, Fadda G, Cauda R., of the Department of Infectious
Diseases, Universita Cattolica, Largo A. Gemelli 8, 00168 Roma, Italy, is
worth reading.
The article is available from the Journal of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy
Online or from Pubmed (http://jac.oupjournals.org/cgi/reprint/dkh047v1)
Both sites require a subscription. Unfortunately, I have subscriptions to
neither. I sourced the abstract from http://www.docguide.com/gpc.nsf/doc?.
The conclusion drawn from the results of a transparently-designed method
are: -
This 4 year surveillance of Providencia complaints clearly indicates that
infections caused by ESBL-producing multidrug-resistant P. stuartii are an
emerging problem.
The convincing results of the study determined 116 extended-spectrum
beta-lactamase strains (ESBL) of which 88% were resistant to ciprofloxacin
and amikacin and 12% to ciprofloxacin and gentamicin. The risk factors of
advanced age, previous hospitalization, neoplastic disease and previous
antibiotic therapy as independent risk factors for the development of
ESBL-producing infections were considered. All ESBL-producing P. stuartii
infections were nosocomially acquired.
For changes of policies in antibiotic use, the sharing of reliable
information would benefit many, including myself, and enhance our antibiotic
use strategies. I hope you are able to source the articles and that you find
the information useful.
Best wishes.
