[e-drug] African Medicines Policy needed (4)

E-DRUG: African Medicines Policy needed (4)
-------------------------------------------

Dear All

The first point raised by our colleague Murtada is very
relevant. We do need WHO to take the lead as it did by
contributing in the organisation of the meeting that took
place in Burkina Faso few weeks ago. We need meetings in
each of the four regional blocks. The purpose of these
meetings would be to produce a draft document that could
later be appraised by individual governments particularly
the MOH's. The meeting should be covened by Dr Samba, the
WHO Regional Director. Participnats should include national
directors of pharmaceutical services, directors of health
systems, pharmaceutical and legal advisers of MOH and
regional blocks (SADC,ECOWAS, ...), academics, and
representatives of NGO's & professional and statutory
bodies in the pharmaceutical sector. To have the meeting
manageable and cost-effective not more that 20 people
should participate. The launch of the pan-african
parliament makes the above proposal even more a great
prospect since legal and institutional mechanisms have just
falling in place!

With regard to his second point that"the first port of call
is an assessment of the current situation; which African
countries have and which do not have a formal medicines
policy?", most of you know by now that such an assessment
has been conducted and documents exist with all details
provided.
