E-DRUG: Amoxicillin/clavulanic acid

E-drug: Amoxicillin/clavulanic acid (cont)
----------------------------------------

Amoxicillin/clavulanic acid ("co-amoxiclav") should in principle only
be used for infections sensitive to the combination. As in practice
this might be problematic, official recommendations are to restrict
the use to serious combined infections (Gram-positive + anaerobics)
with suppurative middle ear infections and bite wounds (dogs/humans)
as typical examples. Clavulanic acid causes - though not often -
jaundice. Some fatal cases have been reported from Australia.

Despite these facts co-amoxiclav is widely pushed as first line
antibiotic in general practice.
