I agree - there is too much chasing of illusions in the world of HIV
treatment, but that is what happens in desperate situations. Let's also
not make people miserable and dejected by saying nothing can be done when
perhaps there are some realistic ways of tackling the problems of access to
treatment for HIV. Generic zidovudine is apparently out there
somewhere. What can those who make it or buy it tell us about the
quality and purity of the raw material, or about the products made with
it? Is it reliable and safe, as well as cheaper than the Glaxo-Wellcome
product? In which countries can it be legally on the market without
infringing patent rights? If the generic is really ok, we should be
telling people about it and encouraging its use.
Also, if nevirapine is or might be (as mentioned in previous E-DRUG
messages last July) a viable and cheaper alternative to AZT/zidovudine,
what do we know about its availability, quality and legal status as a
generic?
