E-DRUG: Antibiotic resistance: Inventing new ones or reviving old ones? (2)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
dear E-druggers,
On the 18th of November, European Antibiotics Awareness Day, Wemos launched
a campaign in the Netherlands to raise awareness on the issue of antibiotics
resistance.

In the Netherlands the use of antibiotics in the veterinary sector is one of
the highest in the world. This poses a serious threat to public health.
Wemos advocates for strict government policies to reduce inappropriate
antibiotics use. However for the Dutch government, and many other
governments, the economic interests of the veterinary sector are put above
public health interests. Therefore active involvement of civil society
becomes paramount. Wemos has joined hands with other Dutch actors such as
the Institute for Rational Use of Medicine, consumers organisations and
healthcare providers to jointly fight antibiotic resistance.
However, antibiotics resistance can only be tackled effectively if addressed
at both national and international level. Besides policy change,
investments need to be made, particularly in resource poor settings, to
facilitate appropriate use of antibiotics. Health workers and citizens need
to be made aware of the effect that antibiotics resistance will have on
their health. It is crucial that international civil society joins forces
to save antibiotics for future generations. We would therefore like to get
in touch with other CSOs working on this issue.
