E-drug: Asia Regional Course on Promoting Rational Drug Use

TRAINING COURSE ANNOUNCEMENT
A two-week course for physicians, pharmacists, directors of health
programs, officials from ministries of health, universities and
private organizations, and other individuals interested in
promoting the rational use of drugs.
This course is offered in collaboration with the WHO Essential Drugs
and other Medicines, Geneva; the International Network forRational Use
of Drugs (INRUD), a network of professionals in ten African and Asian
countries currently researching problems of drug use; the Thai Network
for Rational Use of Drugs (Thai-NRUD), which is coordinated by
Chulalongkorn University College of Public Health.
Venue: Ayutthaya, Thailand
COURSE OBJECTIVES
The course will focus on methods of studying and remedying
inappropriate drug use, including problems with ways in which drugs
are prescribed, dispensed and consumed. Participants will
learn practical approaches for applying key concepts such as essential
drug lists, indicators of drug use, and methods for changing
inappropriate drug use behaviour.
The course will be conducted in English and will consist of
presentations, discussions, group activities, and fieldwork. This
course is highly participatory, and the exchange of skills and
experience among participants adds depth to the learning process.
Course materials are based on those used in Management Sciences for
Health training courses, field work being undertaken in lNRUD member
countries, and experiences presented at the 1st International
Conference on Improving Use of Medicines, Chiang Mai, Thailand, 1-4
April 1997. The participants will be exposed to a wide range of
international experience and materials.
COURSE CONTENT
The following topics will be covered:
* Identifying drug use problems
* Indicators for assessing drug use
* Standard treatments for improving quality of care
* Field exercises on improving drug use
* Influencing prescribing patterns
* Changing prescriber training
* Public education about drug use
* Evaluating interventions to change drug use
* Planning intervention studies
* Country experiences with improving drug use
COURSE FEE AND APPLICATION
The fee of US$2,550 covers tuition, course materials, shared
accommodation, and three meals a day. Participants should plan to
bring sufficient money for incidental expenses like laundry,
postage, telephone calls, and souvenirs. Airfare and health insurance
are the responsibility of the participants/sponsors. Details about
exact course location and lodging will be provided
at a later date. Applications and fees are due no later than May 10,
1999.
