E-DRUG: BBC: Vatican condemns Aids drug firms (4)
-------------------------------------------------

dear E-druggers

I really wonder where the figure of $517 profit in year 2002 comes from. In
2002, the world market at ex-factory prices was $423.5 billion (source IMS).
The two figures do not seem to be compatible. Is there a way to check their
respective accuracy? It would be a pity to spoil a legitimate concern with
questionable evidence.

Best regards.

[moderator comments: the profit figure is indeed too high. It was quoted in
a BBC news article, and sourced to a Jesuit priest,
who is not an economist or prime minister. I would suspect the priest or BBC
forgot the dot: 51.7 billion sounds more right on 423 billion turnover. See
below for the actual BBC text:

"His view was echoed by Father Angelo D'Agostino, a Jesuit priest who runs
an Aids orphanage in Nairobi. He said 400 people died of Aids every day in
Kenya alone, while in Europe and North America it was no longer a fatal
disease.
Why the difference? It is the genocidal action of the drug cartels who
refuse to make the drugs affordable in Africa even after they reported a
$517bn profit in 2002."

The sentiment obviously remains the same!
