E-drug: Boehringer Ingelheim will respect compulsory licences
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
[Great news, Jorg! Let's wait now for similar statements from the
other manufacturers. HH]
The German company Boehringer Ingelheim, producer of the
AIDS-drug Nevirapine has made an official statement that it will not
interfere with countries which issue compulsory licences.
Boehringer was one of the companies involved in the lawsuit
against the South African government. The company was exposed
to public protest from many sides and now seems to have modified
its position.
The statement comes after a meeting of Boehringer Ingelheim's
top management with the Protestant Church of Hessen-Nassau
and was signed 31 March 2003. The text reads: "We agree with the
Doha-Declaration on the protection of public health and will not
take any measures against countries which use the protective
measures of the TRIPS-agreement or the Doha-Declaration to
protect their population (eg compulsory licences) respectively
implement them in their national laws."
