E-DRUG: Books for Developing Countries: Call for $$$$

Dear friends,

Having worked and lived in a developing country for most of my life, I
know how difficult and expensive it is to acquire authoritative sources
of drug information. Even libraries in medical/pharmacy schools in most
developing countries cannot afford to buy journals/books. Keeping this
in view, I have collected some copies of 1996 and earlier editions of
the United States Pharmacopieal Drug Information for the Health Care
Professional (Volume 1), and Advice for the Patient: Drug Information in
Lay Language (Volume 2). Since mailing of these publications is very
exorbitant, I wonder if anyone is aware of organizations/individuals
who are willing to cover the shipping expenses for these important
references. Presently, I intend to send out these publications to groups
in developing countries. Depending on how this experiment works, there
is a possibility to send out medical/pharmacy journals as well.

Any help in identifying individuals/organizations who are willing to
help pay the shipping expenses will be appreciated. Please reply to me
directly (srahmad@essential.org) rather than the entire list. Many
thanks.

----Note from the E-drug moderator:
There was an offer from the IFPMA (the International Federation of
Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Associations) in the 1980's to supply
drug regulatory authorities in developing countries with some free
publications such as ABPI Compendium, VIDAL, etc

The Essential Drug Project (Philippa Saunders, email edp@gn.apc.org)
in UK did supply previous editions of British National Formulary and
Martindale to projects in dev. countries.

The German donor Misereor did support paying for postage of essential
drug publications as well.

If anyone knows of more sources, please send them to Syed.
