E-drug: brain drain of pharmacists
---------------------------------------------
Dear E druggers,
I am looking for information for a research project that I
am involved in here in Liverpool. We are looking at the
issue of international mobility of health staff or brain
drain as it has become known. Many developing countries
are losing valuable health staff to the industrialised
countries in Europe and the US, because of the attraction
of higher salaries, career opportunities, better lifestyles
etc.
To what extent is this happening in the field of
pharmacy (or other health professions)? from the
perspective of receiving countries or exporting countries.
What proportion of staff are being lost?
What proportion of staff employed are foreigners?
What are the resultant effects on the health systems of the
poorer countries who already have big human resource
problems?
Is anything being done to curb/prevent the problem?
Does anyone have any information or experience of this
issue?
with thanks
