E-drug: Cairo conference 10 years on
------------------------------------------------------------------------
---
Dear e-druggers,
Yesterday I received the following message from Gavin Yamey, one of the
editors of the Public Library of Science (PLoS). Please also note that
the first
issue of PLoS Medicine will be launched online on 19th October. I
strongly
advise you to visit their website. Personally I think this is a
marvellous enterprise
as it aims to bring medical information free to all.

Dear Valeria,
To mark the 10 year anniversary of the landmark "Cairo Conference" on
population and development, PLoS Medicine today publishes a provocative
essay on what has been achieved in reproductive health since the
conference.
The essay, by Shereen El Feki, acclaimed Healthcare Correspondent at The
Economist magazine, gives you a sneak preview of the PLoS Medicine
October
launch issue (which goes live online on 19th October).
At the 1994 Cairo conference, officials, experts and activists from 179
countries
drew up a 20 year plan to deliver reproductive health care for all.But
the plan is
being threatened, says El Feki, by ideological battles, a severe
shortfall in
international funding for reproductive health, and the HIV pandemic,
which
shows no sign of slowing.
Since the Cairo Conference, says El Feki, "a fierce battle has emerged
between religious conservatives who eschew abortion and condoms in
favour
of abstinence and fidelity, and more liberal voices who argue for a full
armamentarium."
