The State government is planning to emulate the Tamil Nadu Medical Services Corporation Ltd's model of centralised tendering and purchase of drugs for State-run hospitals, the Minister of State for Medical Education, Sharanprakash Patil said on Wednesday. He told press persons here that such a system would not only ensure the availability of quality drugs in hospitals, but also bring down costs. 'We have sent a proposal on this to the Finance Department. Once it is cleared, we will place it before the Cabinet,' he said.

He said the system, if approved, would be applicable to hospitals run by the departments of Medical Education, and Health and Family Welfare.

At present, every autonomous medical institution procures medicines worth crores of rupees through e-procurement. The Department of Medical Education also buys medicines through the Karnataka State Drug Logistics and Warehousing Society.
