E-drug: CIOMS ethics document (cont'd)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear colleagues,
CIOMS is NOT a subsidiary of WHO, but (see their website
who.int/ina-ngo/ngo/ngo011.htm) it uses WHO facilities and is
subsidized by WHO; its chairman is the former vice-chairman of the
Drugs Policy Department of WHO. Its links with national medical
academies and research councils are rather obscure, and its
documents show that influence from the pharmaceutical industry is
not far off. I doubt whether the organisation has any influence on
the practice of medical research, because outside Geneva hardly
any medical researcher is aware of its existence. There clearly is a
need of better transparency about the activities of the organisation;
in the first place the names of the members of the executive
committee and their interests should be disclosed, preferably on the
Web.
Regards,
Dr.L.Offerhaus
