E-DRUG: Clinton Foundation announcements? (2)
---------------------------------------------

About the status of various clinton announcements :

We met cipla ranbaxy and hetero last month and they all expressed their
"disappointment" in seeing that the theoretical conditions (quantity,
solvability, etc) that led to the negotiation of triomune at 140 for
example had not been fulfilled anywhere in the reality.

When I asked Ranbaxy what and where was the best "deal" in quantity and
price that occurred he had difficulties answering and finally said :
Rwanda, for less than 10 000 people, accessed the "clinton price" but it
went with the promise of buying for 100 000 the next year and that never
happened." In fact they had to wait for a year for the payment of that
first purchase...

Still, Cipla (in front of our camera) announced a new "average price" for
triomune being 165 dollar year patient.

This average price would depend on quantity bought, but regardless of
whether it is NGO purchase, gov purchase, middle income of low income
country.

All this is confirmed (theoritically still) by IDA, which started
distributing cipla's products.

Look for more info at http://www.ida.nl/

I asked IDA to make the following simulation : "an Ngo in burundi would
like to treat 100 patients with triomune 30, how much would you sell it ?

The answer is "181$ plus freight if not in a Clinton country, 131$ plus
freight (3 to 4%) in a "clinton country".

(Burundi just signed the clinton agreement)

With a few conditions : no patent on the medicine imported, solvability of
the NGO, and agreement of Clinton foundation to recognize the NGO as part
of the deal if in a "clinton country".

Please keep us updated if this comes into facts.

Much was made of the possible impact on prices. Economies of scale may,
in time, allow such cuts. Much though depends on whether or not the
Clinton Foundation "deal" with Aspen and the Indian generic companies is
ever put into effect. The local tender process has not been concluded
yet.

What is the status of the various Clinton Foundation announcements?
I hear such mixed things about them.
