E-drug: Communication skill teaching in Pokhara, Nepal
----------------------------------------------------------
DEAR E-DRUGGERS,
Department of Pharmacology, at Manipal College of Medical Sciences
(affiliated to Kathmandu University), Pokhara, has introduced the concept of
developing Communication Skill in Medical Undergraduates from the first
year onwards.
Department objective is creating awareness regarding the rational use of
drugs. As a part of achieving this objective, all the students are trained
to communicate effectively with simulated patients regarding the prescribed
drug. Each student is expected to give the following basic informations to
patients depending on their level of understanding in simple language:
Nature of the disease
Non Pharmacological measures--- Rest, Diet, Exercise etc.
Pharmacological--- Drugs prescribed
How ?---- Route, Frequency, Duration, Time relation to food.
When ?--- Result to be expected, follow up.
What?---Side effects, Adverse effects, steps to be taken.
Ask for recap by the patient.
Communication Skill is assessed in the Sessional Examination and also in
University examination. We train here 200 students every year.
