E-drug: Consultation draft WHO Guidelines on Interaction with Commercial
Enterprises
---------------------------------------------
Dear E-druggers,

You may recall the letter we have sent to Dr Brundtland last May expressing
our concerns about the lack of clear WHO guidelines on its interaction with
pharmaceutical companies and the potential conflict of interests.

WHO has now been HAI to comment on its draft Guidelines on Interaction with
Commercial Enterprises. This text has already been circulated to the Member
States in July. Please have a look at the Guidelines.

WHO has been extremely slow in sharing this draft text with public interest
NGOs. In order to facilitate an input from civil society in the debate
about these guidelines we have put the full text on our website. You can
find it
at http://www.haiweb.org/news/WHOguidel-draft.html

HAI will certainly comment extensively before the end of the year. It has
started a consultation among its members.
For those organizations that would like to comment to WHO directly here is

Dear Mr van der Heide,

WHO is in the process of updating its guidelines concerning interaction
with commercial enterprises. It is hoped that the new guidelines will
contribute to openness and public coinfidence in our dealings with the
private sector while enablilng innovative and positive approaches to our
cooperation and partnership.

We have initiated a broad consultation process to seek the views of al
interested parties on the guidelines. We would therefore be most
appreciative of any comments you may have on the attached draft document.
We would be grateful for comments before the end of December 1999. Final
guidelines will be produced subsequently.

French and Spanish versions of the draft will be available shortly.

I look forward to hearing your views.

Yours sincerely,

Denis Aitken
