Dear E Druggers:
When cough suppressants have been tested in the real world, i.e. by
actually tape recording coughing due to an upper respiratory tract
infection, they (codeine and dextromethorphan) do not work. Here are a
couple of references on this topic:
1. Taylor JA, Novack AH, Almquist JR et al. Efficacy of cough
suppressants in children. J Pediatr 1993;122(5 pt 1):799-802.
2. Eccles R, Morris S, Jawad M. Lack of effect of codeine in the
treatment of cough associated with acute upper respiratory tract infection.
J Clin Pharm Ther 1992;17:175-180.
