INTERNATIONAL TRAINING COURSE ON MEDICINES MANAGEMENT IN HEALTHCARE INSTITUTIONS: MEDICINES AND THERAPEUTICS COMMITTEES GUIDING CHANGE

The Department of Pharmacy, Gertrude’s Children’s Hospital, Nairobi, Kenya together with Management Sciences for Health (MSH) and International Network for the Rational Use of Drugs (INRUD) is pleased to announce an international training course on medicines management in healthcare institutions.

Purpose
The course has been developed with the aim of demonstrating that medicines and therapeutics committees or similar committees can be utilized to guide the change that is much needed in the management and use of medicines that results in rational medication use and optimal patient outcomes. Participants will be equipped with relevant tools necessary to address medicine use challenges within their localities. It is desired that they will make use of learned skills to enhance rational use of medicines at their local healthcare institutions and report on progress made. Since health systems in different countries vary widely, the course curriculum is in cognizant of these variations.

Course Objectives
  1. To demonstrate the crucial role of a medicines and therapeutics committee in enhancing rational use of medicines.
  2. To understand practical approaches for ensuring sound medicines management and use.

Target audience
The course is designed for physicians, pharmacists, and health officials in hospitals, ministries of health, universities or private organizations. Those who are interested in improving rational use of medicines through MTCs, and who will be in a position to provide training and technical assistance to other MTCs, are invited to apply. Candidates with some experience with medicines and therapeutic committees, and who wish to expand their knowledge, are preferred.

Methodology
The course will be conducted in English and will be highly participatory consisting of lectures, discussionsand small group activities. Participants will be given time to ask questions unique to their settings.

Course fee
Early registration deadline: 30th April 2013 : US$ 300
Late registration deadline: 17th May 2013 : US$ 350

Course fees include attendance to the course, copies of course materials, lunch and light refreshments on all the 5 days. Please note the course fees do not include flights or accommodation. Payment details will be e-mailed to you once the registration form is completed. A course dinner is planned for Friday 7th July 2013 evening for all participants. The fee for this dinner is included in the registration fee.

Participants should plan to arrive in Nairobi on Sunday 2nd June 2013 and are expected to bring sufficient money for incidental expenses like laundry, postage, phone calls, etc. Travel and health insurance are the responsibility of the participant/sponsoring organization.

Cancellation Policy
A full refund will be given for any cancellation before 3rd May 2013 (US$50 will be retained for administration costs). Cancellations up to 17th May will incur a 50% charge on the initial fees paid and no refund will be given for cancellations thereafter.
