with Ray Moynihan (Australia) and Alan Cassels & Barbara Mintzes (Canada)
Saturday, October 16, 2010 at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver

The UBC Therapeutics Initiative presents a one-day workshop on "Disease Mongering" at the Irving K Barber Learning Centre at the University of British Columbia Point Grey Campus in Vancouver, Canada [map] on Saturday, October 16, 2010, 10:00 - 17:00.

Led by internationally respected journalist, author and researcher Ray Moynihan from Australia and co-presented by internationally renowned Canadian researchers-authors Alan Cassels (UVic) and Barbara Mintzes (UBC), the workshop will introduce participants to the public health problem known as “disease-mongering” – widening the boundaries of medical illness in order to sell tests and treatments – and will deepen the knowledge and insights of those already familiar with the phenomenon.

The PDF brochure can be viewed/downloaded from: http://www.ti.ubc.ca/PDF/diseasemongering.pdf
The information is also posted on the Therapeutics Initiative web site, both on the front page http://ti.ubc.ca and at http://ti.ubc.ca/seminars

The workshop will combine didactic lectures, interactive sessions and group-based learning, using academically rigorous and at times humorous material, including video. The workshop will present real-life case studies, will include a group exercise in which the participants get a chance to create their own disease-awareness campaign and will conclude with an overview of the consequences of this public health problem, as well as a discussion about potential policy responses to the problem.

The intended audience for this workshop is: university students from the fields of medicine, pharmacy, nursing and allied health disciplines, journalism and public health; practicing physicians, pharmacists, nurses and other health practitioners; journalists, policy makers; anybody with a keen interest in this emerging public health phenomenon.
