The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is the world's largest
drug regulatory agency with a rigorous drug approval process. FDA's
seal of approval is often the only criteria on the basis of which many
countries in the developing world approve drugs. However, the FDA is
often criticised by the industry to be slow in approving drugs.
According to an article in this week's Journal of the American Medical
Association - JAMA (December 11, 1996 Vol.276:1826-1831) titled "Approval
of new drugs in the U.S. : Comparison with the United Kingdom, Germany,
and Japan" authored by Dr. David Kessler et al. the U.S. outpaces Germany
and Japan in approving new drugs and has a similar approval rate to that
found in U.K. The abstract of the article and accompanying news story can
