E-drug: Drug Bulletin Special Issue on World TB Day
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
With reference to World Tuberculosis Day , March 24, Drug Bulletin
(English publication TheNetwork for Consumer Protection in
Pakistan)'s has published a special issue on Tuberculosis.
The highlights of the special issue are:
- Prescription audit of GP's compliance with NTP's guidelines, study
conducted by Azhar Hussain. The study identifies a specific area
where National Tuberculosis Program (NTP) should step in to avoid
any kind of catastrophe at a larger scale. It highlights that how TB
patients are being treated in private sector that cater health needs of
around 80 per cent of the population.
- Responding to this need, we also reproduced "Guidelines for
Diagnosis & Management of Tuberculosis" A National Clinical
Guideline. These guidelines were developed the National
Tuberculosis Control Program in collaboration with the Chest Society.
- Published "Report based on follow-up survey to assess availability
of essential TB drug in public health facilities." This second effort by
the Pharmaceutical Unit of TheNetwork shows that no doubt the
situation regarding the availability of essential anti-tuberculosis drugs
has been improved since the implementation of DOTS in the
Rawalpindi District but there are still gaps that need to be abridged.
(Survey conducted by Dr Farrukh Qureshi)
- In the article on "Status of NTP in Pakistan", taking into account the
recent government initiatives regarding poverty alleviation, the overall
situation of health sector and then with specific reference to
tuberculosis and NTP's policy guidelines has been covered . It has
been discussed no doubt, DOTS has been implemented to a larger
area of the country that needs evaluation and monitoring to assess
the situation in reality. ( - By Nabeela Aslam)
