E-drug: Drug Price Increase in Pakistan (cont)

In India formulations under price control are allowed a 100% mark-up over
manufacturing costs. In addition the government also reserves the right to
impose a ceiling price for such formulations. The Drug Price Control Order
says in this regard, "...Govt. may... fix the ceiling price of a scheduled
formulation .... keeping in view the cost or efficiency, or both, of major
manufacturers of such formulations..." The concept of 'leader' price does
not exist.
The problem, however, that we face today is that only 40% of drugs are under
price control and this is proposed to be reduced to just 20-25% very soon.
