E-DRUG: Andrew Herxheimer, 1925-2016 (2)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

The death of Dr. Andrew Herxheimer means indeed a great loss to everyone with
an interest in unbiased source of drug information and the role of
patients/consumers in pharmacovigilance.

I will remember Andrew as someone who was very approachable, amiable and left a lasting impression. I first met Andrew in my formative years in 1984.

He became one of my key advisors when I reviewed the Pakistani drug formulary in the late 1980s; this collaboration was instrumental in my decision to pursue training in
clinical pharmacology and drug regulatory science.

Over the years, we interacted in many forums including ISDB Summer School in Tokyo and NPS Summit in Sydney, and he was kind enough to accept an invitation to give a seminar whilst I was at US FDA.

I will also remember his and his wife Christine's generous hospitality when I visited their home during one of my London visits.

My thoughts and prayers are with Christine, their daughters, and all his near and dear ones.

Dear all,

Like so many on this list I am sad about the death of Andrew Herxheimer, a wonderful man who has done so much to improve the way medicines are understood and used. I first met him in my early twenties at a meeting of Health Action International.

Later from 1996-99 we worked together when I was the coordinator of ISDB, an organisation of independent drug bulletins he had founded. I remember him as a kind man and a great teacher who was generous with sharing his knowledge. Until this day I benefit from his teachings. I was always struck by his desire to learn new things, professionally and beyond.

Spending time with Andrew almost always meant that you would have an unexpected new experience. He once dragged me to a French play in Paris at a time my French was really not up to that. He convinced me otherwise and he was right, We had a marvellous time (it was of course a comedy).

He was a great writer and an entertaining speaker. His word play jokes (in a variety of languages) livened up every meeting he attended. We will miss him and never forget him.

I hope the love, gratitude and admiration so many feel for Andrew will give some comfort to his family in this difficult time.
