E-drug: EDL - ATC (cont'd)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
As a follow-up to the message from Marit Ronning on the ATC/DDD
classification system, I have the following comments.
WHO is working on the acceptance of the classification system by
the Expert Committee on the Use of Essential Drugs. At the last
meeting of the Committee this issue was discussed and a
suggestion was made to include the system as an annex to the
report. This was not accepted for the reasons that Professor
Reidenberg has put forward. However, as Ms Ronning has pointed
out, a reference to the system was made in the report.
It would appear from the discussion on E-drug that there is a need
for the system to be associated in some way with the WHO Model
List of Essential Drugs. It would be greatly appreciated it if someone
from the E-drug could prepare a statement for the next Committee,
listing the reasons justifying the need for the system to be included
and the advantages that this would provide to Member States. This
would greatly benefit the secretariat in preparing for the next
meeting of the Expert Committee.
In addition the ATC and the DDD lists are published regularly on

[Given the lively discussion on this topic, maybe the participants
in that discussion could draft a proposal together? HH]
