E-DRUG: Emerging markets fuel $ 665-685bn global market (2)
-----------------------------------------------------------
Hi all
Wilbert asked, in relation to the IMS statement that "Emerging markets
currently represent 17% of the global market, but will contribute 30% of
growth next year" whether "anyone ha[d] a better overview of the African
market?"
The usual figure quoted, based on previous IMS Health reports, was that
the African market constituted about 1.3% of global pharmaceutical
sales. The 2006 release from IMS Health (see
http://www.imshealth.com/web/content/0,3148,64576068_63872702_70260998_77974518,00.html)
complicated the picture by providing figures for a combination of Asia,
Africa and Australia, excluding Japan. For 2005, that region contributed
$46.4b to global sales. or 8.2% of the total. However, % growth (in
constant dollars) was second highest in this market - 11.0%. Only the
Latin American market ($24b, 4.2% of global sales) was growing faster,
at 18.5%.
There is a note to this table stating that sales from "unaudited
markets" are excluded. It could be assumed that the majority of such
markets are in developing countries.
Lumping Asia (excluding Japan), Africa and Latin America together, as
an approximation of "emerging markets", but including Australia (and
presumably New Zealand) would exclude transitional economies in Europe,
but might come close to the truth. If the two aggregated regions
represented $70b in sales in 2005, then, with 15% growth across the
board, they would be approaching $100b after 2 years, and could be
responsible for 30% of growth (not the same as 30% growth, of course) in
2007.
Does anyone have access to a recent issue of a detailed report, IMS
MIDAS Quantum, which has specified this level of detail? If so, the
answer should be easily obtained.
regards
Andy
