E-drug: Essential drugs missing from market (cont)
---------------------------------------------
Dear All,
This is Eurek Ranjjt, pharmacist from Kathmandu, Nepal.
The message posted by Mr. Azhar Hussain was quite disturbing to me
as I also graduated from Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Karachi, the
largest University of Pakistan securing First Position (and Gold
Medal) from the Faculty in the year 1999-2000.
I am currently working as a hospital pharmacist in Nepal.
The message is quite alarming and I hope that it will reach the minds
of drug regulators in Pakistan. I had not imagined that the problem
might be so severe in a country like Pakistan where most of
multi-national pharmaceutical companies like GlaxoSmithKline, Bristol
Myers
Squibb, Novartis, Aventis (to name a few) are manufacturing drugs at
a large scale.
We are also facing the same type of problem in Nepal which I had also
pointed out in a presentation to pharmacists here in Kathmandu during
annual meeting of pharmacists this year.
The situation is slightly different in Nepal in that there are no
muti-national companies manufacturing drugs in Nepal and she has to
rely on local companies and drugs imported from India.
Drug importers, here are thus interested in importing expensive and fast
moving drugs only which leaves shortage of many slow moving but
important drugs.
However, no study has been carried out to measure the degree of problem in
Nepal. I would like to conduct such a survey in Nepal to publicize
the matter and request all to send advice to me in conducting the
survey. I would also be grateful if anybody could advise me on format
(including sample size) of
the survey so that I may present it to concerned bodies like WHO and USAID
who work in close liaison with Department of Drug Administration, the
drug regulatory authority of Nepal to publish (and only publish) the
list of essential drugs in Nepal.
Thank you,
Eurek Ranjit,
Pharmacist,
