E-DRUG: EU Health Council rejects DTCA
-------------------------------------

Dear E-Druggers

HAI Europe applauds health officials for renewing their commitment to ban
advertising of prescription medicines to the public.

On 2 June EU Health Ministers rejected a proposal by the European Commission
to relax the EU ban on advertising prescription-only medicines to the
public.

HAI Europe strongly supports this action by the Health Council. Both EU
Health Ministers and the European Parliament have now rejected
directto-consumer advertising of prescription drugs. It is clearly not
wanted in Europe said Margaret Ewen, HAI Europes coordinator for this
campaign. These are significant decisions for all who want unbiased,
quality drug information not advertising to sell medicines and increase
drug companies already enormous profits.

The EU Health Council decision is part of the review of the European
legislation on medicines. The Commission has stated that it hopes the
regulatory package will be formally adopted by the end of the year.
