E-drug: Evidence based medicine (cont'd)

I am prompted to respond to Dr Atieno Ojoo's email about EBM. There are a
number of sources for the Cochrane library and a genuine attempt to make it
available free of charge for low and middle income countries. The details
are:
1. Directly from Update Software website.
http://www.update-software.com/
A list of countries currently approved is attached. Others may be added by a
direct approach to Update software stating the country requesting the
access, the institution (essentially is it academic rather than commercial)
and the reason access is needed
2. Via another provider, There are three possibilities:
Hinari- Health InterNetwork
http://www.healthinternetwork.org/index.php
A WHO led partnership making access to Journals available on line.
Registration is on line but I do not know what criteria are applied
Latin American and Caribbean Center on Health Sciences Information
http://www.bireme.br/bvs/I/ihome.htm
I believe direct application to Bireme is necessary but I could not find an
on-line application form.
International Network for the Availability of Scientific Publications
Programme for the Enhancement of Research Information (PERI)
http://www.inasp.org.uk/peri/index.html
<http://www.inasp.org.uk/peri/index.html>
This is essentially a service to South America. Again I believe direct
application to PERI is necessary.
3. Scottish Intercollegiate guideline network (SIGN)
I was surprised that Dr Ojoo did not have access. This is available at
http://www.sign.ac.uk/
4. Finally at the risk of self promotion , I wrote a book for pharmacists
called Evidence based pharmacy a couple of years ago. Details at
http://www.radcliffe-oxford.com/books/bookdetail.asp?ISBN=1+85775+384+4
The section on the internet is now out of date in this version but updated
in a Spanish edition. The book brings together sources and check lists for
identifying evidence and appraising evidence
