E-DRUG: expired drug donations?

E-DRUG: expired drug donations? (cont)
--------------------------------------

Dear e-druggers,

Having worked in a developing country in a dispensary mostly dependent
on donated drugs, I can attest to the value of these donated
drugs, even if past their official expiry date. I agree that it is an
emotional and controversial issue, but the judgement of health
professionals should be trusted when handling solid dosage forms.
Visual inspection and some knowledge of storage
conditions and the nature of the ingredients of the drug under
scrutiny can go some way towards reducing risk. If these drugs are
the only available, then certainly the patient will not complain.
Dispensers of expired medicine should however, be willing to take the
responsibility of not "stretching" this issue too much.
