E-drug: Generic ddI in Thailand at last (cont'd)
---------------------------------------------
First and foremost, congratulations on this victory to everyone in
Thailand who has worked (and undoubtedly will continue to work)
long and hard to ensure that people with HIV/AIDS in Thailand have
affordable access to antiretroviral therapies.
Ever since Tido first mentioned to me this weekend that it was likely
that the GPO would produce 150 mg powder sachets of ddI for use
twice daily, I have been a bit concerned about this particular dosage.
The US Food and Drug Administration has approved 250 mg powder
sachet for use twice a day in patients weighing 60 kg and above and
167 mg sachets for those weighing less than 60 kg, meaning that the
Thai dosage will be approximately 10% less than that recommended
for light-weight Americans. Although Thais are obviously on average
considerably lighter than Americans, such a dose reduction in a drug
that already has mediocre bioavailability is still of concern to me. Does
anyone on this list have experience working with a 150 mg powder
preparation of ddI? Is this, unbeknowst to me, a standard formulation
elsewhere in the world?
Thanks,
Toby Kasper
