E-drug: Generic prescription & rational use of drugs (cont)
---------------------------------------------
[cross-posted from Indices with thank. BS]
Dear Ruwan,
It is extremely important for medical students to be doing what you are
doing-asking questions & finding out about Rational Use of drugs. Excellent!
Keep it up!
The def of RUD according to WHO is :
"The Rational use of drugs requires that patients receive medications
appropriate to their clinical needs, in doses that meet their own individual
requirement, for an adequate period of time & at the lowest cost to
them & their community."
Rational use of drugs in a biomedical context includes the following
criteria:
 Correct drug
Appropriate indication-that is, the reason to prescribe is based on
sound medical consideration
Appropriate drug, considering efficacy, safety, suitability for the
patient & cost
Appropriate dosage, administration and duration of treatment
Appropriate patient-that is, no contraindications exist, & the likelihood
of adverse reactions is minimal
Correct dispensing, including appropriate information for patients about
the prescribed medicines
 Patient adherence to treatment.
Regarding the country examples promoting generic prescribing, I will send
you as an attachment. The best publication to start with is "Managing Drug
Supply", The selection , procurement, distribution, & use of
pharmaceuticals, brought out by Management Sciences for health in
collaboration with the WHO, Kumarian press . It is called as the Yellow
Bible-which it surely is. You can access the WHO site, which gives
treasures of information http://www.who.int/medicines . Access the
headings of Rational use of drugs, Essential drugs, etc.
I will keep you posted of other websites, publications, etc. The reason for
my interest in your query is the fact that I am working in the field of RUD
in Karnataka State Pharmacy council under the guidance of Prof.
Ranjit Roy Chaudhury, President of DSPRUD.
With best wishes,
Ms. C. Sunitha Srinivas
Deputy Director, DIC
Karnataka State Pharmacy Council
